Word 97 weird thing happening

Yesterday I loaded some scanning software.

When I now go into word and look at a previous document,
the document has lost its formatting (bold, etc.) and all
file info is showing at the bottom of every document. I
have uninstalled the scanning software, rebooted the
machine, but still this is happening. Can anyone help.

Below is typical of what's happening:

In the File > Open dialog, change the Files of Type box from "Recover
text from any file" to either "Word documents" or "All files". See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/RecoverText.htm for explanation.

This setting may or may not be associated with installing scanning
software. I'd tend to think it was a coincidence.
