one way:

Tools/Customize. Select Menu Bar and click Reset. If you don't want
to reset the entire menu bar, click the Commands tab, find Page
Number command under the Insert category and drag it back to the
Insert menu.

Or, to generalise a little and spell it out more completely

To restore Word98 default menu items that seem to have got lost

- click "Tools"
- click "Customize"
- click the "Toolbars" tab
- run down the long list of toolbar names to find the name "Menu Bar"
and click the little box alongside it
(an extra menu bar appears)
- click the Reset button
- select "Normal"
- click the box alongside "Menu Bar" again
(the extra menu bar disappears)

Now use your usual menus to check that the missing items have
returned.

Why bother with such plodding detail? Well, Beth pointed me in the right
direction four months ago to recover a missing "Save" option, but I
couldn't quite piece it together and was too embarrassed to ask again.

So I've only just realised where I went wrong. With J.E.'s slightly
different way of putting it here, I suddenly realised that "Menu Bar"
was an entry in a long list and not as I had thought the description of
what is always at the top of the screen.
