Word adds unwanted template items

Dear all,

In Word 2003 I use templates for all kinds of purposes. Assume that I have a
style item called "P 1 6+6" which for me means a paragraph style with space
after and before of 6 pt. I then use a shortcut key "Alt P, 1" ton apply the
style. So far so good. When working with a document using that template works
fine ... usually. However sometimes Word makes modifications to the style
items. Somwetimes there is a new item called "Char" (which incidentally
cannot be deleted) and/or "P 1 6+6 Char" or "P 1 6+6 Char Char" etc. I can
delete the latter two items but that will also delete automatically the
original style "P 1 6+6" from the document (not from the template file). As I
saud the style "Char" cannot be deleted, the other two can. Having deleted
them, I copy the original style "P 1 6+6" from the template to the document I
am working with. After the style "Char" is gone.

Why does this happen, where do the "char" styles come from, and how can it
be prevented?
