Word alters open file to Read-Only

Quite often, as I am working on a DOCX file, after saving the file 5-6 times,
the file mysteriously becomes Read-Only and I am required to alter the
filename to save it again. I have read on other forums that this problems
happens to quite a few users. Is there any fix for this?

Yes, as far as I know. This is an educational institution, and the techies
keep control over updates. The phenomenon started earlier this year. Before
that time, I had never experienced this at all. And further, it happens to
files that I have used for quite a few years, but reuse in classes from time
to time.

Thanks for your reply.

Well I am pretty sure that the Read Only syndrome was sorted out by an
update to Office. I just cannot remember because it was some time ago. I
suggest that you talk to the support techies and get them to ensure that the
OS, Office and AV are all fully up to date with Servicepacks as well as
other patches. If that doesn't resolve the problem, tell them to try the MS
Knowledge Base for the bug: IIRC, it was hotfixed with a registry change and
then released to everyone as part of the monthly updates.

Hi. Now I have the same problem in Word 2007 that DaveBabe but I do not find
any solution yet. All the sofware [OS (windows 7) OFFICE 2007 and AV (CA)]
is updated.

Additionally when I tried to save a file in Excel, the system reports file
errors, but later the following operation said "no errors found".

Thank you in advance for your help. I am desperate. Glauco

I tried the first 3 steps to correct the Read Only problem described by
others (and one other, which I'll describe below) As far as I know, that
didn't fix it. I haven't yet replicated the read only problem, but there's
another glitch that started just last week. This is in Word 2000, running on
XP. In my toolbar, one of the tools I use regularly, the one that lets me
change the color of the font, stops working. I go to Customize, pull it out
and bring it back, and then it works normally for a while, but this "failure"
seems to recur daily. Before finding your help site, I tried reinstalling
Word after first trying the "repair" function, but neither of those steps
fixed either of these two problems. Any further suggestions?
