Word and Excel 2007 cannot find a file another user has open

When trying to open files in Word 2007 and Excel 2007 I am getting a message
(sometimes) that the file cannot be found when it is in use by another user
on our network. There is no consistency to this at all, sometimes it
happens, sometimes it doesn't. It should be giving me the option to open a
read only version of the file, but often times it is not. I'm using Windows
XP.
