Word and Excel accessing the floppy drive on startup

Please help. I had some files on floppy, which I wanted
to print out. I did this then removed the floppy disk.
As I closed each file, the floppy drive made a lot of
clanking noises, but the files closed down OK. Now, when
I open ANY document in WORD or EXCEL, or the applications
themselves, the floppy drive light goes on and acts as
trying to read from the disk even if the file is on the
hard drive. I have tried everything I can think of,
opening the original files from the floppy and closingf
them again, renaming files etc., to no effect . . . .
PLEASE HELP !!
