Word and Excel hanging

Sal

I wonder if you have any idea how to solve a problem that has suddenly arisen
with my Word & Excel software.

I am able to start both programs and enter data onto a new document or
spreadsheet but as soon as I try to save the document or sheet the hour glass
symbol appears permanently and I need to use Ctrl, Alt, Delete to end the
non-responding program.

I can only access existing documents and spreadsheets via the “My Computerâ€
function. Existing documents and spreadsheets cannot be opened by Word or
Excel. Trying to open existing files with Word or Excel results in the
permanent hour glass symbol.

Norton Anti Virus, Spybot and Adaware scans did not reveal anything.

Any ideas anybody please?

I am facing the same problem, this problem started only few days ago.
Since then I tried every possible virus scan, spyware scan, but this
did not solve it. I also tried to use the repair function in microsoft
installation program, and did not solve it. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling, did not work. This is driving me crazy, help anyone????

I have same problem first time today. I did a system restore back to 18
April and the problem went away. However, as soon as I reinstalled
Microsoft updates that came out this week, the problem came straight
back. Suspect the recent updates?

I experienced the same problem, the best solution was to run syste
restore to a date proir to the problem. After that, disable an
software updates from printers and or other hardware such as keyboard
or external drives. They attach firewalls that caused the problem

Interesting to see how many other users have had this same problem! I spent
the whole morning trying to find a fix. I also ran Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus
programs to no avail. It really looked like some kind of a virus. Guess it
was: a Microsoft Installed virus. I have lost many hours this past few days
trying to use Word and not being able to save the files, especially when
doing a "Save As". I nearly lost two hours of editing on a document. Thank
goodness Word kept a copy of the "lost file" and I was able to recover it.

Wonder why they are waiting so long to provide an new update for this
problem. I have an HP digital camera and that is probably why it hit me.

Thanks to all who posted information about this problem. Good to know we
are not alone out here trying to keep our computers working. Sometimes
applying MS updates is not the right thing to do??

I really don't want to edit my registry. I guess all I can do is wait for
the new patch to come out next week.

DO NOT change registry or uninstall Office. As Dave Peterson wrote in "Excel
and Word Hang Up..." a quick and simple fix can be found at
http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/185303742. Don't know how it works but
it
does. Page two of the article gives a link to "Kellys Korner" for the fix. It
worked perfectly.

Regarding the fix from Kelly's Korner, "how it works" is simply by
making the same change in the registry that Microsoft's article tells
you to make. Because it's automated, though, you don't have to get
into Regedit and make the change yourself, and there's no chance of
making it wrong. IMO, the Microsoft article should have published a
script like Kelly's instead of giving instructions for manual editing.

The downside, if there is one, is that the registry change apparently
doesn't solve the problem for everyone. And if the manual fix doesn't
work for your situation, then neither will Kelly's fix.

I tried the fixes proposed above, still did not work. I had to do a
System Restor and the problem is of course "temporarily" saved.

Your System Restore has uninstalled *all* the security updates you
downloaded. A better approach is to manually uninstall just the problem
update (KB908531) and not reinstall until the corrected update is available
this coming Tuesday (April 25).
