Word and Excel Issue

I'm using Windows 2000 Professional. I installed Word 97
and Excel 97 on my workstation. When I open a word or
excel document, I receive a message saying the document is
already in use do you want to make a copy.

If I open up Word or Excel and then open the document
(instead of clickin on a document) I don't receive the
error message.
