Word and Excel not running after update

R

Randy Hermann

I recently updated Office XP, perhaps for the first time
in over a year?, and now Word and Excel will not run.
Whenever I try to start either program I receive the
following error message:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or
file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to
access the item."

I am logged in with administrator priviledges. The file
names (and some others as well) are now listed in a green
font in Explorer.

I've tried a system restore without success.

Do I have to do an uninstall (if so, how?) or is there
some other fix?

If possible, please respond to my email account ( delete
(NOSPAM)'s )as well:

Thank you,
Randy Hermann

Hi Randy,

If you also use Norton AV you need to go to Options in Norton and in
the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

Hi Beth,
I tried turning off the Norton's feature as directed, and
completely turning off Norton's without any change in the
problem.

Another bit of inofrmation: When I try to open a word
document driectly (double click on a shortcut to a doc),
there is a brief bit of hard drive activity and then
nothing else happens- no error message, but no program
running either.

PowerPoint and Access work fine. I just realized that
Outlook does not work, but Outlook Express works fine,
though it was notifying me that it was the default client
for a while (no longer does that).

Any other suggestions? I have the Office XP CD and could
reinstall, but I'm guessing that will be a long process.

Thanks,
Randy
