Word and Excel Seem Befuddled

Any advice would be much appreciated!:

Excel: Every time I start it, the program opens the last five word
documents stored in my Home file. I have to wait for them to load,
then close each one, after choosing 'don't save' changes for each one
as well. I went into preferences, and I can't see where it is an
option to have the last five documents saved open upon starting the
program. I have changed all that I am able to in 'View', 'General',
etc.

Word: Certain project templates won't show up on a new document:
Invoices, tab divider templates downloaded from websites. All that
comes up is a blank page with a blinking cursor; no gridlines, tables,
art, or formatting.

I did have a macros virus at one point, but it's been cleaned. Does
this have anything to do with the problems I'm having? Should I buy a
whole new Microsoft program? These programs don't do me much good if I
can't utilize them properly.

Thank you for any advice you're able to offer!

I like your "befuddled" description.

Excel--one guess--look in Applications/MS Office
2004/Office/Startup/Excel. If the problematic docs are in there, move
them somewhere else.

Word--I don't totally understand your question, but make sure you are in
View | Print Layout. Also make sure Table | Gridlines is checked, and
go to Word | Preferences | View and make sure "drawings" is checked and
"image placeholders" is UNchecked, and test anything else that seems
relevant.

*don't* buy a new program--even if something has gotten corrupted, you
can re-install--but the program rarely corrupts such that it needs
re-installation. There are a million troubleshooting steps to try before
going to such drastic measures.
