Word and excel Templates changes

When I open a new word or excel sheet, they always open with the last format
and settings of the last document in word or the last worksheet I was using.
They do not open with normal.dot. It is like it is saving my last settings
everytime I use a word or excel sheet.

Go to Tools, Options, Save tab and make sure that the option 'prompt to save
changes to normal.dot' is checked. If it is checked, when you close Word,
are you being prompted?

This helped my word program, but my excel spreadsheet still doesn work.
Someone sent me an excel sheet where they have changed the columns to numbers
instead of letters, when I open this file and close it, the next time I open
a blank excel sheet it also has the numbered columns. I can open a different
spread sheet that has the letters as columns (A,B,C's) then close it and open
a new sheet and it will be changed back to the normal format with letters for
columns and numbers for rows.
