Word AND Microsoft Error Reporting crashes

S

Sol Apache

I have been having quite a few problems with Word crashing lately, and when
it does Activity Monitor and the Force Quite apps show that Microsoft Error
Reporting has crashed as well so I never find out what caused the problem!

What can be causing this? How do I find out?

I am using Office 2004 on Mac G4 using Tiger (latest version)

Thanks for any help

I share the same concerns as Sol Apache. In addition, will this be a
problem for Mircosoft or Apple creating a fix? I expect many Word
users are experiencing these problems since the Tiger update, but
Microsoft and Apple might not understand to what degree (probably
often) these crashes are happening because the error reporter is not
sending the report. Further, it seems likely that many of those same
Word users don't know enough to report themselves to get the darn thing
fixed.

Hi Sol,

Did this crashing begin after upgrading to Tiger? Any other third-party
software you might have installed around the time Word started crashing?
Under what circumstances does it happen?

You might want to work through the procedures detailed here:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another browser
for this site.)

It has happened on several occasions. Lately I have been reformatting and
cleaning up text to place into InDesign and on several occasions when I was
doing a find and replace for replacing hyphens and spaces with m-dashes the
m-dash would disappear from the find/replace dialog box field and then
everything would freeze up. Maybe something to do with unicode??

Thanks

Sol

I¹d like to add that Word NEVER crashes (for whatever reason) without the
error reporter crashing as well.

Hi Sol,

I wish I had some tried and true answers for you, but I don't. The
Tiger/Word issues are really puzzling, especially since not everyone
experiences them. I have no doubt that both MS and Apple are looking for
fixes.

I guess if I were you, I would try removing and reinstalling Office at this
point. If you decide to try this, don't shortcut it. Follow the steps
outlined here: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.) This may, of course, do nothing; but at least you'll be sure that
your Office installation is "clean".

I would recommend making a backup of your preference files, Normal/Custom
templates, etc., first. Then, if everything works without hangs/crashes
after the reinstallation, you can add the backed up files in one by one,
testing after each; at least this way you'll avoid having to reset all your
preferences, etc.

On the other hand, if the reinstallation accomplishes nothing, you can just
put *all* the backed up files back, and at least you'll be no worse off than
before.

Please keep us posted on whatever you decide to try and whether or not it
helps. Good luck!

I just removed my .plist preferences for Word, Excel, Entourage and
PowerPoint and for now they are working fine.

Whatever this Microsoft Error Reporting application is, it needs an update.
