If I open Outlook first (set to use Word as default editor), an instance of
winword.exe appears in the task manager. With Outlook open, if I open Word
next, a second winword.exe appears in the task manager along with Normal.dot
listed in the blue title bar along with the words, "(Read-Only)". I am
prompted to save a different copy of normal.dot. Why is this happening? The
normal.dot is currently in the user's "documents and settings" folder; i.e.
the normal.dot is not on the network.
It appears as though Outlook and Word are competing for use of the same
normal.dot. I've tried the following...
1. deleting all normal.dot
2. deleting all normal.dot's from the workgroup template path and changing
rights on the folder to only "read" so that future normal.dot's cannot be
created there
3. I've done detect and repair installs on Word and Outlook
I have a couple of questions regarding possible workarounds... is there a
way to tell Outlook to use one normal.dot and Word to use a different
normal.dot? I've turned off "use Word as default editor" within Outlook and
that fixes the problem; or, I shoud say, band-aids it. Could this a SR-1
issue with Office XP. I could uninstall Outlook and install a pre SR-1
version of just Outlook....
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
