Word as e-mail editor for Outlook

D

djarvis-miller2858

One day Word was the e-mail editor for OUtlook (both 2003) and then all of a
sudden it wasn't. I have checked and it is selected as in the "Tools" area
to be the e-mail editor.

the message says that either word is not installed (it is it) or is not the
same version (both 2003).

any suggestions on how to correct this problem?

thanks

I'll take a shot at explaining this, however Roady can (and should) clarify
and correct me where I'm wrong. The explaination I'll give you is pretty
simplistic, and tells you why, but not what caused this to happen. So, here
we go.

Ole32.dll is a file that provides Outlook with a stripped-down version of
Word for e-mail editing. IMHO, it customizes the Outlook Editor with Word
features and functions.

Somehow, Windows forgot that this file exists, and when you try to change
your default editor to Word, Outlook asks Windows for this file. Since
Windows can't remember it or it's location, it gives an error to Outlook,
which interprets that as "Word is not installed."
(This is where Roady can probably explain what may have caused this, and
clarify whether this is accurate).

In essence what Roady did was tell Windows that this file exists, and where
it is. I'll break the command down for you (and anyone else that is
curious).

Regsvr32.exe is the command to register files with Windows (create entries
in the Registry for them).

%Windir% is shorthand for C:\Windows (or C:\WINNT depending on which your
computer has)

So, in effect, "Regsvr32.exe %Windir%\System32\Ole32.dll" told Windows to
Register the program Ole32.dll which is located at the (C:\Windows or
C:\WINNT) System32 folder.

No, the problem is on the PC that gives you the error.

In what format is the message? HTML, Plain Text, Rich Text? Do you get the
same results when you try to answer an e-mail with the same format from
someone else?

Try a Help-> Detect and Repair... This will check for corrupted program
files. On some occassions youll have to insert your Office CD and reapply
any Service Packs and additional updates.
