Word attachments change to .docx

More explanation might be needed since it's not 100% clear what you're
asking.

..docx is the default format for Word 2007 document files. If you don't have
Word 2007, you can open these files using the free compatibility pack, which
is available here:

If your correspondents do not have Word 2007, they can obtain the
compatibility pack. Alternatively, you can save your Word files in Word
97-2003 format.

Moreover, if the recipients have Word 2000 or above, with all updates, they
should get a message saying that the attachment is in a new file format and
that there is an add-in available for download that will allow the current
version to open it. I experienced this just recently on my sister-in-law's
computer, trying to open a .docx attachment on her system, which had Word
2003 without the Compatibility Pack installed (but patched up to date).
