Word attachments from Outlook are read only unless dragged

S

Shelly F

Attachments are from Outlook 2003
They open in Word 2003 (11.5604.5606) WinXP.

All word attachments which I open from Outlook open in word ok,
however they are all read only.
None of the attachments are being sent read only, and I do not get a
dialog box in word giving me the opportunity to make the document
editable. I have been told that this is an Outlook problem, not a word
problem. If I drag the attachment to the desktop, and then open it -
it opens satisfactorily (not read only).

Anti-Spam: Change shellyfnospam to shellyf to respond. Thanx, y'all have a nice day!

When you open an directly from within Outlook it is first saved to a temp
location. If you start editing the message in the tem location it is very
likely that you'll somehow loose the modifications. Either save it first
directly from within Outlook or open the attachment and when you want to
modify it save it first out of the temp location by choosing File-> Save
As...

Thank you Roady for the answer but it is not satisfying.
I will explain myself.
I have the same problem but funnyly enough it is not on all computers
having Office2003. On some computers the attachements are not
read-only. This enables me to make some modifications and then send
back *the same* document in a reply. Very practical.
It is a great hassle to have to save it on the desktop, edit it and
keep versions of the same document going back and forth...
It is very useful to be able to save the changes IN the body of the
email message.

You're still much much better off not taking the risk that your changes will
be lost. I always advise users to save the attachment first - I have seen
far too many people lose all their changes. Seriously - you're working on a
temp copy of the file when you do it your way.
I would very much like to know where this setting is.

Thank you.

Thanks for the reply.
In my company this problem does not arise because it is internal mail and
the original is still in the sender's Sent Items.
I need to know where this setting is to decide if the manager's secretary
can update the documents that are sent to her from her superior or to set it
Read-Only by the Salesman so he doesn''t lose the changes.

Please advise.

If you open the attachment from the preview pane, they will open as read
only. If you open the message and THEN open the attachments, they will open
as editable files. When you are done editing the document, you should be
prompted to save them where you can specify the file name and location.

You know, I never noticed that difference myself. Good to know. :)
