Word Auto Numbering

I have some rather long documents where I use outline numbering...I apply
styles to that numbering. I have had an issue with one file in particular
where the numbering simply disappears, not only in my active file, but when I
go back to my backups...other than full manual numbering, any suggestions?

Is "Automatically update document styles" turned off in Tools |
Templates and Add-Ins?
