Word automatically making underline to appear bold

This question was previously posted re Word 2003, but no appropriate solution
was posted. Hoping someone has a fix!

In Word 2007 I have underlined text in a paragraph. When I bold more than
half of the text in that paragraph, it automatically bolds the underline. If
I bold just a couple of words it does not bold the underline. I do not want
any bold underlining. Does anyone know how to stop the underlining from
bolding?

You might be able to add some more text to the paragraph (not bold) and
format it as Hidden...

I cannot recreate the problem so I wonder if this issue is font dependent
illusion? If I format a paragraph with Calibri font then all the underlines
appear bold at 100% zoom, though at 200% zoom it is clear that the
underlines reflect the bold/normal attribute of the text they are associated
with.

If I format the same paragraph with Times New Roman font then only
underlines associated with bold text appear underlined in bold even at 100%
zoom.

This applies no matter how much or how little of the paragraph is formatted
bold.

What I'm seeing is the result EKH reported, but on a line-by-line basis. If
I format any part of a paragraph bold and then apply underlining to the
entire paragraph, the lines that are entirely bold have a bold underline.
The lines that are not bold have a not-bold underline. The line that is
partly bold will have a consistent underline throughout, bold if roughly
half the line (actually a little less) is bold, otherwise not-bold.

Your example has only selected words underlined. I specified underlining the
entire paragraph (though that may not be what EKH was describing).

Suzanne, thanks for the hidden text trick. I'll try that as a work-around.

Graham, you're correct. I was using TNR. When I change the font to
Calibri, I don't get the same behavior.

Following is the paragraph in issue, I'm using tags to show formatting:

"for Transit, its servants, agents, contractors, subcontractors, licensees
and invitees to enter upon the <bold>Transit Lands</bold><underline> for the
purpose of <bold>constructing, erecting, repairing, altering,
improving</bold>, maintaining, removing and reconstructing the Transit
Facilities</underline>; and"

I am also viewing at 100%. Left and Right margins of .65. Left indent of
..25 and hanging ident of .25. Only the underline in the second line of text
goes bold.
