WORD AutoRecovery erroe

I'm running Word 2004 for MAC v11.1 with MAC OS 10.3.9
Does anyone know why I get the error messages:
"Word cannot complete the operation because too many
files are open. (file name)"
Saving the AutoRecovery files is postponed for
"file name"".

These error message appear even if I don't have a Word file or window
open!
