word background colour locked

Has anyone encountered this problem?
I used to change background color in word for easy reading with less
glare but cannot do that anymore.
This problem showed up also in Outlook express at the same time.
I am thinking that this could be caused by some system setting that is
overriding making changes to background colors but have been unable to
resolve it and after trying every option I know of to effect
background colors I am ready to give up
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron,

In the Windows control panel Display applet check the color setting for the display then try changing to another theme and then
back. Also check that 'high contrast' settings in the Accessibility options are turned off.

If you're in Word 2007 and looking for the white on blue choice it's no longer available.
