word cannot complete the save

Keith Wright

I have recently been experiencing the following problem. When I open a word
document, do some work on it, and attempt to save (Ctrl>s), I receive the
message "word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error". The
title at the top of the document then switches from the saved name of the
document to "~WRL2622.tmp" or similar name. The message then comes up "try
again?", When I do, and the "save as" window comes up, if I type in the
original saved name of the document, it will be save okay.

This seems to happen only when, after I have worked on a saved document, I
try to save it again. After I have gone through the above process ending up
with the "save as" command, further saves to that document using the Ctrl>s
command seem to work okay.

I have looked through various Microsoft support areas, but have found
nothing that seems to work.

Does anyone have some suggestions?

Help is appreciated.

Thanks for your suggestion Jay - I cleaned out all of the temporary files,
but I unfortunately I still have the same problem. If nothing else, however,
I did get rid of a lot of useless junk! I have also bookmarked your web
page; there is a lot of useful material there. The problem is more of an
irritant than anything else; I may just have to live with it.

Thanks again -

Keith

It could be as the message indicates, you don't have the necessary
permissions.

Based on what you describe I'd say this is the case. If you don't have
Full Control then Word will be unable to complete the save. When you
save a document, Word first creates a temp file and writes a new
version of the document. Then it deletes the old document and moves
the temp file to take its place.

It sounds like you may have Delete permissions but you don't have the
ability to take ownership of the files. Here's a KB article that
covers the permissions required for Word:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q277867

Note it was written for Word 2000/Windows 2000 but the information
should still be applicable for all versions. (Had I known the version
of Word you are using and operating system I may have been able to
provide a more specific article.)
