Word cannot create the work file. Check temp enviromental variable

Sometimes when I open Word in my Office 2000 I get the following error
message which if I keep Word open it sometimes does strange things. The error
message is "word cannot create the work file. Check the temp environmental
variable." Any ideas as to what is going on?
