Word cannot locate the server application

Robert Switala

I'm using Mac Word 2004 (11.2) - I can open each of the files that seem to
have an imbedded object - one is a Word doc the other is a PDF file.

When I try to open the imbedded object (Word or PDF Icon) these are the
error messages I receive:

Word cannot locate the server application for
Outlook.FileAttach Objects [This is the one I get for the embedded Word
icon]
and
Word cannot locate the server application for
Package Objects [This is the one I get for the embedded PDF icon]

I have searched various newsgroups, the web, MS site, etc. - I still am
unable to resolve this issue - does anyone have an idea??

Thanks - Rob

Hi Robert -

Were these files created on a PC, perhaps - and/or emailed to you?

In general, it sounds like you have not been sent all the required
supporting files for the embedded objects. They also require that compatible
parent programs be available on your system... They are of a file type that
Word cannot open. That is essentially what an 'object' is. Without more
specifics about the objects, these are only guesses, but, FWIW,

The Word doc with the embedded Word Icon was created elsewhere using the
icon to represent another Word doc which was actually _Linked_ rather than
embedded. When the file was sent to you, the linked file wasn't included.
Although there are other possibilities, the same is probably true of the
PDF. IOW, you received a Word doc with embedded _icons_, not embedded
_files_. As a result, the non-existent files cannot be opened.

Thanks CybetTaz,

I emailed MS - and to my surprise they responded quickly - they said Word
for Mac can not extract embedded objects - not anything can be done to open
them on a Mac. The linked file is actually present - I can extract them
with WinWord on a PC.

I've sent an email to DataViz asking if their Mac product can extract them.
If not, I'll either find a PC and do it or boot up VPC 6.X and extract with
WinWord - not very convenient - but a workaround.

Thanks - rob
