Word cannot open document

All of a sudden it appears that Word 97 SR-2 operating on
a Windows XP machine (with all the recent security
patches)can no longer open document in a deeply nested
directory. The following error shows up

Word cannot open the document. Try one of the following:
* On the File menu, click Open to open the document
* Make sure the document has a *.doc Extension (<path and
file name>)

Needless to say I have tried everything including a few
suggestions from the support pages. nothing works.

Karl,

copy the file to your desktop and then try opening it from
there. If it does open then the problem is that the
filepath for the original is too long (256 characters for
a filename/path I believe (thereabouts) - you said it was
deeply nested).
