Word Cannot Open DOCX File Icon on Desktop

I have installed Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition. When I
save a Word file in the native .docx format on my desktop and then click on
the file's icon, Microsoft Word aborts with an error message stating,
"Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry
for the inconvenience." But when I save the same file in the .doc format on
my desktop and then click on the file's icon the Word opens with the file
displayed and ready to work on.



If I first open Word itself, then use File>Open in the menu bar, the .docx
opens ready to work.



Is there a reason why when I click on the .docx file icon it will not
automatically boot up Microsoft Word and open the file?



Would appreciate any help anyone may have.

disk itself, followed by Verify again, and the disk passed inspection. Then
I ran DU's Verify and Repair of Permissions followed by a rerun of Verify,
and the permissions also passed inspection. I then restarted from the
regular startup disk and tried to open a .docx file by clicking on the file
icon on the desktop, and it failed the same way as before. It didn't correct

Did you start up from the OS X DVD & run Repair Disk Permissions while
booted up from the DVD? That is not the way permissions should be repaired
as it bases permissions on the OS X version on the DVD. Whenever you repair
disk permissions you should be started up from the HD so that permissions
are assesed based on the actual update level of the OS.

Also, IMHO the Verify Disk Permissions is a waste of time as it does nothing
productive. Verify Disk, OTOH, can determine whether Repair Disk ‹ which
must be run while started up from the DVD ‹ needs to be used.

Once you've confirmed that the permissions have been repaired properly I'd
suggest that you retrieve the OS X 10.4.11 COMBO Update from the Apple
Downloads site & reapply it. Use this link:

Reply with your results if that doesn't correct the problem. Additionally,
perform the following & include a description of what happens:

1) Hold the Shift Key while you double-click the .docx icon on the Desktop.

2) Log out, then hold the Shift Key while you log in.

3) See what happens if you attempt to launch Word by double-clicking a .docx
icon while in a new User Account.

The results of each of those 3 procedures should indicate what needs to be
done to resolve it.

I reran Verify and Repair Disk Permissions from the HD. It found some
differences to fix. Then a rerun of Verify Disk Permissions was clean. Next
I ran Verify Disk which was clean. These steps didn't change the problem
opening .DOCX files by clicking on the file icon on the desktop.

I checked the Combo Update and in its intro screen it says it will, among
other things, load Safari version 3. But I am already on Safari version 4.
I'm not sure whether the Installer would force an earlier version, but I do
know I don't want to go back to Safari 3, so I didn't download this update.
Do you still think I should do this and then uninstall Safari 3 and
reinstall Safari 4?

I'm not sure what shift-doubleclicking on the .docx icon is supposed to do,
but, feeling daring, I tried it anyway. Nothing happened.

I restarted in Safe Mode (Shift-Start, bypasses automatic login items, among
other things). When I clicked on the .DOCX file icon on the desktop this
time it opened properly. I don't know what the difference was because Safe
Mode bypasses so much stuff and some of the stuff is invisible anyway.

Got any suggestions?

Please note that the suggested "power-off restart" is essential to this
process. It triggers the OS X start-up house-keeping tasks we need to run.

Some of this issue is a corruption in your Launch Services database, and
we're hoping that the system will fix the inconsistencies in that with a
power-off restart, to save us having to get serious with it

Well, we'll go right to the last part of your reply first Since starting
the Mac in safe mode circumvents the problem I'd say go ahead with the OS X
10.4.11 Combo Update, then just repair disk permissions again & see if that
resolves it for good. I appreciate your concern about Safari, but the older
version will not overwrite 4.x - it doesn't bother to tell you so, but I
just ran through the process myself so I wouldn't be guessing... Safari
4.0.3 is what I started with & what I still have.

If that doesn't correct the problem you'll have to fully assess what you
have in the startup items. Also, you haven't given any indication of having
logged in (not Start Up) while holding Shift, nor whether you tested in a
new User Account. It's still possible that it may have something to do with
your current User Account since that remains unchecked.

Let me know how you make out.

I can only see part of this thread. Have you right clicked on the .docx
file and used Get Info to change the default application to tell MacOS X
to open .docx files with Word?

was attempting to launch Word but resulted in the "encountered a problem &

I tried uninstalling NeoOffice that I forgot I installed and when I did that
it solved my problem. I'm now able to click on the .DOCX file icon on my
desktop and it opens the way it should with Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac
booting up. I think the problem had something to do with NeoOffice having
the permission to open the .DOCX file instead of Microsoft Word 2008 for
Mac.

Bingo! You got it....

Yes, NeoOffice registers itself in the Launch Services Database as the
application to open .DOCX. After it does that, all .docx will go to
NeoOffice.

All applications register their favourite file types with Launch Services,
so after installing something, you often get these little outbursts of
excitement when file types get steered to the new application.
