word cannot open file

Hi

Can anyone tell me what the problem is with Word 2000 (running on XP Home)?

When I try to open a particular file I receive this error message:

Word cannot open existing [followed by a small square] ...

But when I select 'ok' the document opens. What's happening and how can I
stop the error message?

Possibly you are using Norton Anti Virus: deselect the Office Plug-in option
in NAV.

Hi

I'll try that. I am using NAV. Is it wise though to deselect the Office
Plug-in?

Thanks for that.

Even Symantec can't tell you what the Plug-in is good for. As long as you
leave Auto-Protect enabled, you do not compromise your protection.

Hi Suzanne,

Well, both Symantec and Microsoft have a reason
for the plug in :) It just didn't quite work
out entirely as envisioned originally.

Part of the reason for the Norton Antivirus plugin's
existence is Microsoft adding, as a 'feature', hooks in Office
it expected Antivirus software makers to use to tie Word tightly
into the scan so that a macro virus couldn't find a back door :)
MS added an Antivirus API to Office starting with Office 2000
http://microsoft.com/presspass/press/1999/apr99/o2ksecurpr.mspx

Now, we have a rather lengthy MS article on how to live with or
without the Norton plug-in :)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820

At the same time, additional work from Microsoft has been done
to hook the antivirus software in, this time to work with XML
file formats.

Hi

Seems I have same problem with Word not opening a file. I am using Windos XP
Home, using Office XP Pro and Word will not open a word doc. Word will open
other docs but not a particular one. Error message reads that document name
or path is not valid.

Have installed Office service pack 3, reinstalled office, and am using
Norman Virus checker. Document can be opened using OpenOffice but not Word.
Any ideas from anyone out there?

thanks
