word cannot open the document

when I pick a DOC file I get the message "word cannot open
the document". If I open word and go to the file it opens
just fine. Has anyone else had this problem and if so did
you find a fix?

Possibly the Office Add-in in Norton Anti Virus (turn it off) or Word simply
needs reregistering in Windows: use Start, Run and type in

winword /r

and press enter.
