word cannot open the document

I have a document that I was working on in Word 97. It's
on a 3 1/2 floppy. When opened it up I received an error
message that said contant could be lost but the system may
be able to retrieve it. It asked if it should retrieve it
and I clicked "retrieve." It retrieved the document and
than asked if it should revert back to original document
and I clicked "yes." I was than allowed to make changes to
the document but when I clicked the "save" button I
received another error message. I'm afraid I don't
remember what it said but I think part of it said due to
an error changes weren't saved. Now I'm not able to open
the document. I keep getting the same error message. "Word
cannot open the document." It than tells me to open it
from file and check to make sure that a .DOC follows the
name. (It does.) There are other documents on the same
floppy that still open so it appears it's only this one
document that's the issue. Any ideas how to get back into
my document?

You've learned the hard way why we say NEVER open a Word document directly
from a floppy or save directly to a floppy. This is probably the #1 source
of document corruption. Always save to the HD first, then copy to the
floppy; to open, do the reverse: copy to the HD, then open from there.
