Word cannot open this document

I copied 2 Word docs to a memory stick, made some revisions, and
copied them back to my HD, replacing the older versions. I now get the
message on all 4:

"Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might
not be a valid Word document."

Any suggestions would be highly appreicated.

Hello Gary,
I do not quite understand the way you copy the files. You had 2 word
document on HDD, copy them to the stick - review them on the stick and
then copied them back to the HDD? If so, they might be corrupted, it
is always better idea to edit files on your local disk rather than on
a stick.
You can try in Word File>Open> -Recover Text from Any File if that
will help. Please post back with more info

Hi Gary:

I think what has happened is that you did not "safely remove" the memory
stick before pulling it out. So one or both the Word documents was still
open and being written to. This is the effect: the file on disk is
incomplete, and thus it is not actually a Word file, so Word can't read it.

You need to use the Eject command (on a Mac) or "Safely remove" on Windows
before disconnecting a memory stick, otherwise this problem is likely.

Sorry.
