Word cannot save file correctly

Good day,

I have a rather unusual problem with several copies of Microsoft Word from
Office v.X. Word is running on several new computers that have the upgraded
Panther installed on them (Mac OS X 10.3.1). All of these machines connect
to a Panther server, too (Mac OS X Server 10.3.1).

If I create a document and save the document to the server, it will crash
the program. The only way any of these users can save the document is if
they "Save" it to either their desktop or if they do a "Save As" to the
server.

Microsoft Office has been upgraded to v10.1.5, and I have run "Repair Disk
Permissions" on some of the individual workstations, but have had no luck. I
am going to run the "Repair Disk Permissions" on the server later today.

Any thoughts? This has proven to be quite a nuisance for these users.

Thanks in advance!

John

To follow up, the "Repair Disk Permissions" on the file server did not fix
this problem. Any thoughts?

Best regards,

John

Hi John,

I thought your problem might be a variation on the Jaguar Save to Server
problem (<http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/WordMac/apple_os_10.htm>) so I asked
one of the experts and apparently not. Here's what he said:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's a different problem.
Tell the user it is probably directory permissioning of the file server's or
workstation's temporary directories.
Let him have a read of the article, so he understands that a Word file
"save" is in fact a Write, Rename, Delete, Rename.
Tell him to ensure that "Always create backup" is turned on in
Preferences>Save. Tell him that will give him a "different" indication, not
necessarily a cure :)
And ask him to tell us what the solution is when he finds it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So check out the article I referenced above and do let us know if you find a
fix. Hope this helps at least a little.

Thanks, Beth. I'll try this out Monday when I'm at the client. They're
having some other permission problems with some Quark 6 files, so I'm
thinking the server's permissions are screwy. I'll let you guys know what I
find out.

Thanks!

Hi Beth,

Here's an update to this problem I'm having with MS Word 10.1.5 on Mac OS X
10.3.1 client and 10.3.1 server:

If I launch MS Word and create a document, I can save the file to the server
without any problem. I can do this with a "Save As" or just a "Save" command
with no issues.

However, if I open the document from the server, make a change and then save
it, the document closes, the Word menus turn gray for about 5 to 10 seconds
and then the program unexpectedly quits. The interesting thing is the data
is saved in the document ... it just causes the program to crash.

I've checked the server settings and permissions, and everything appears to
be set properly ... it's using AFP protocols and inherits permissions from
parent. The server itself is a 1.25 GHz DP G4 with about 1 GB of RAM. It
has four share points with all of the same settings.

I've changed the "Save" preferences in Word as the MVPS.org article
suggested, but that did not resolve the problem.

Also, I don't believe this problem is a corrupt preference problem because
this error happened to me the first time I tried to save a Word file
connected to the server. Before I tried that, I had never been connected to
their network.

I'm a bit stumped. Any advice you or anyone can offer would be greatly
appreciated. Please note I will post this issue on MacFixIt.com's forums to
see if anyone there has a suggestion.

Thanks!

John
