Word can't open.inusuficient resources

Recently I've been having problems opening Word . it
starts to boot up but then hangs and a white error mssg
appears
"Insufficient resources to open Word.. do you want to
close the application?"
When I click yes, the whole msg disappears and so does the
start-up menu and the only way forward is to re-boot. Then
scandisk takes several attempts before it can complete
standard scan (this always happens & I also find it
impossible to defrag).
I've reduced th start-up apllications to bare essentials
and increased stack pages but problem still occurs.
Help, please...
