Word changes file path inside {INCLUDEPICTURE} field code

I am currently writing my dissertation. I am using the {INCLUDEPICTURE} field
code to include figures in my chapters. The figures are stored as .EPS files
inside a subdirectory, kept with the .DOC file of a given chapter. This
allows me to change a figure, which is then automatically reloaded inside the
chapter. A typical field code looks like this:

{INCLUDEPICTURE “Figures\\Fig1\\Fig.eps†\d \* MERGEFORMAT }

I have been using this for weeks and it works fine. The problem is that
recently the field codes in one chapter got completely messed up. It now
shows up like this:

{INCLUDEPICTURE
“..\\..\\..\\..\\Application%20Data/Microsoft/Word/Figures/Fig%201/Fig.epsâ€
\* MERGEFORMAT \d}

I do not know how this happened. The %20 suggests this has something to do
with a URL path. I am totally surprised by this. How can Word change
something in a field code the author has typed? I would argue that it is the
author’s responsibility to maintain the content of a field code and not Word
itself. I have to redo some 40 field codes and I really hope this does not
happen again.

I found the solution to this problem on the discussion groups itself.

The solution is:
- Use "/" instead of "\\" within the file path in the {INCLUDEPICTURE}
field code.
- Deselect "Tools > Options > General > Web Options > Files > Update links
on save". This should be done on each individual computer opening the .DOC
file.

I would still argue that this checkbox be deselected by default. Who likes
to see his/her field codes be altered by default?

Thanks to the person who posting this solution,
Marcel Dijkstra
