Word Chart

I'm working with a large number of charts in Word rather than importing them
from Excel because I have too many problems with changes, styles, etc. when I
import them. However, I don't know much about charts in Word, and they don't
seem to have quite the same flexibility as in Excel. A couple questions
about bar charts.

1. I have text in cells that I would like to break onto 2 lines. In Excel
you can use Alt-Enter to do this. Is it possible to do in Word?

2. I would like to make the boxes for colors in the legends bigger, without
increasing the size of the text. Is this possible?

IF you create a table in the Word document, select it, then Insert the chart (I
assume you're talking about MS Graph) then it should base on the Word table. And
you should be able to format the table's contents as you'd like to see them,
including text wrapping to multiple lines.
2. I would like to make the boxes for colors in the legends bigger, without
increasing the size of the text. Is this possible?
I don't think you can change the size of this box, no.

Hi CM

To add one small bit to Cindy's reply.

You can use either MS Graph Chart (the default in Word) or MS Excel Charts in Word. For the latter Insert=>Object and Select MS
Excel Chart.

Either can add overhead to the Word file as they are both embedded objects. The Excel Chart insert works, with some limitations,
as you may be used to in Excel. (You can also do the charts in Excel and use Edit=>Paste Special in Word to insert a picture of the
chart.

For the colors in the legend one method is to create your own using a textbox with a table inserted in the text box. The table with
two cells per row (or use autoshapes) then size as you wish and fill one 'cell of each row with color and line and position it over
your chart.

Bob/Cindy:
The table the graph is based on isn't in the text, therefore I can't format
it there. I'm working with embedded Microsoft Graph Charts, so the data is
in the datasheet attached to the chart, and therefore set up (although not as
manipulatable) as an Excel sheet. I don't seem to have the ability to format
anything in this datasheet--which is what I'm trying to do as it's the basis
for what shows up in the graph.

And I realize that putting them in the document this way makes my file
bigger, but in the long run there's far less hassles than doing them in Excel
and then importing them (I find that fonts always change because I use styles
in my documents, and as well, when you're working with 180 charts in the same
file you run alot more risk of replacing a chart with the wrong one if you
have to change anything--not to mention trying to keep them all straight!

Interesting thought about putting a text box over the graph to make my
legend boxes bigger. I'll have to think about whether that's worth the
amount of work it'll take to do. I was hoping for an "easy" fix, but it
doesn't look like there is one.

That's correct. It's a very "plain" interface.

You know you can also use styles in Excel? By default, both Word and Excel use
"Normal". But you could define a set of styles in Excel that will be unique when
brought into Word.

Or, as Bob suggested, you could create the table and chart as an Excel object IN
Word, rather than importing.
