Word closes after PowerPoint is opened

We are using Windows XP, Office 2000, and Docs Open
3.9.5. When I am in a document in word and then decide to
open PowerPoint, the document closes automatically WITHOUT
prompting me to save the changes. Why would this happen?
and What is the fix.
