Word closes when last file is closed

User has Word 2003 and has noticed that when she closes the last file she
has opened, this automatically closes word. She'd like the application to
stay open when she has closed the last currently opened file.

Does anyone know if the behaviour she's noticed is the default and if so can
it altered?

TIA

You didnt specify how the user is closing Word so you might already know
this but, have the user close the document using the X for the file
window , not the upper most x on the right hand side.

The X i am referring to is located on the tool bar that holds the file,
edit, view, insert, format, tools, table, window, help commands. the X
is located to the extreme right directly underneath the X that will
close the entire application

using FILE | CLOSE will also close the application

email me and I will gladly send you a screen shot of what I'm talking about.

Thanks for the post Mike.

I'm aware that there are two X's, one for the file and the other for the
application. The user is using the lower X to close the file, which should
not close the application, but does!

I've seen the behaviour myself so it's not user incompetence.

I thought that one was too easy. haha.

Interesting problem though. Does your company use any sort of Document
Mangement software? (PD Docs, IManage etc?)
