Word Closes with Errors and Restarts

Every time I close word, I get a message that the app closed improperly and
that an attempt will be made to save the file I was using. I always have to
manually close this dialog box without allowing VISTA to search for problems.
Word then automatically opens a new file. How do I stop this from
happening.

Hi Patt,

Do you have a HP photosmart printer? Thats always happens when the HP
printer is set as the default one. Try to uncheck your printer as the
default printer. After that, you have to select manually the printer when
you want to print.

Hope that's help you.

There are three possible causes: an incompatible (HP) printer driver, a
partially corrupt Word DataKey or an incompatible third party add-in.

If you have an HP printer, switch to another printer and test again.

If it is the DataKey, simply delete
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\version number\Word\Data.

The DataKey is automatically regenerated by Word when you next start it.

To see if it is an add-in, test by running in Safe Mode. From Start, Run
(Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Open a document and test for editing and closing now. If it
is OK now, then you have installed something that has placed an incompatible
add-in in Word/Office.

See how to find add-ins

I am having the same problem in Word 2007/Vista. I have tried all three
suggestions and none have worked. I have the same problem in Excel and
Powerpoint as well.

I had already tried changing my default printer (and the other two
suggestions) before posting. Do you have any other suggestions, or is the
problem better suited for an HP rep? Thanks.

What happens when you start in Safe Mode?

Hi Terry, thanks for your help. I took the issue to HP and completed a chat
online w/a service tech. While she immediately said that issue was unlikely
from the driver, she suggested I uninstall, restart the computer, and
reinstall.
Now I am no longer experiencing problems when I close ms word, so it was
definitely a problem with the HP drivers.

Your suggestion of deleting the data key also ameliorated my issue of word
not responding when I start running the application. I only wish I would
have come across this info earlier- I have spent months searching for
word/office updates, forums, etc to fix these problems!

The problem is that even I admit to probing in the dark. I know that there
are definitely issues with HP printer drivers - especially all-in-one
printers - and with something corrupting the registry, but not able to say
what is really causing them.
