Word Compatibility

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am trying to send my word doc to a PC user and the document either crashes or when it finally opened (a .doc in 2000-2008 format) the 42 page document was now 200+ pages.

The only compatibility error I get when checking is a "Word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set" every time - despite the fact I have changed it within the preferences and the preferences reflect the change to ~"2000-2008 X". Even a new document now shows this error message before I do more than type a word and "save as".

Superfluous perhaps: Another friend helping out tried to open the .docx and .doc in OpenOffice for grins with no luck, though the PDF I created worked just fine.

Any ideas or any more info needed?

Thanks

I'm having the same issue with the same version and operating system. I'm
trying to take a file from that system to a PC running Word 2003. The
"blow-out" in pages in my case relates to the 2003 version allocating each
line of every table in the document to a new page! And there are quite a few
tables. I can't seem to shake the incompatibility message either.

Anyone have any ideas about which boxes to uncheck in the "options" list?

Thanks in advance!

This is a classic example of a corrupt file - most likely one or more of the
tables - for which there is no "option" to check or uncheck:)

See the information here:

Unfortunately, #4 is probably the only one that will work in this case.

BTW: This is exactly the same suggestion made by Daiya Mitchell in reply to
the post you quoted.

Dear CyberTaz,
I chose to use #2 (copying all but the final paragraph mark into a new
document). This worked.
Thanks for your assistance.

Glad to hear it! I was just a bit concerned because the corruption may have
been one or more of the tables themselves. Apparently that wasn't the case.

I had the same problem. I sent a 10-page document that blew up to over 100
pages when my PC-owning client received it. Try saving your Word for Mac 2008
document with the SAVE PREVIEW PICTURE TO DOCUMENT box unchecked. You'll find
the box under FILE and PROPERTIES. If you make the change in Word
preferences, I believe that affects new documents only, so you need to make
the change to the document itself (under FILE and PROPERTIES). That seemed to
solve the problem for me. The only other fix I've found is to open your Word
for Mac docs in Word for Windows 2002 (installed on a PC or Boot Camp
partition) and re-saving with a different name. I've also downloaded the Word
for Windows 2003 Reader (free) from the Microsoft site to check my documents
before I email. What a pain! I thought these products were supposed to be
100% compatible!!

Let me know if these suggestions help. Good luck.
