Word consuming resources

I have a question about Word 2003. It seems that winword.exe stay's in the
backround even when I am not using it. I will notice my system slowing down
and not being as responsive as it should be and looking at task manager I see
winword.exe running and consuming alot of memory and CPU resources. It almost
seems like a memory leak. When I end task on winword.exe my system comes back
to normal. Why does it do that and how can I fix it?

Are you using Word as the editor in Outlook (or other program)?
