Word; convert MAC file to Windows

B

Bob_S

A member of our non profit emailed us a word file from his mac that we
can't open properly in windows. Unfortunately he's on vacation and I
don't when I will be able to reach him.

Another member has already tried opening the file on his windows pc. I
have files from him a couple of weeks ago that worked fine so I
suspect has changed on his end. This time the attachment doesn't have
the normal filename. I have tried saving the file in a .doc or .rtf
format but I have same problem. Word opens the file conversion window
asking me to select an encoding format. Below is the heading from the
file now called ATT00492.txt

--Apple-Mail-13--575668374
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Type: application/applefile;

Hi Bob:

From the headers you have posted, that's a Zipped .doc in MIME format.

Save the file to your disk and open it with WinZip.

Cheers

Thanks, I thought it might be but I couldn't get standard Windows to
open it. But after some trial and error PKZIP did the trick.

Excuse meeeeeeeee
John,
It might be the hot weather so I get things slowly :), but
From the headers you have posted, that's a Zipped .doc in MIME
format.
how did you read it? Can you explain me it, please?

Hi Little Creature:

From this:

That's a MIME preamble.

"Transfer encoding: base64" means it's Zipped.

"Content Disposition: attachment" means it's an attachment.

Content-Type: application/applefile means it's a binary.

filename=Minutes_4-07.doc tells me it's a Word document :)

Cheers

Correction: Base64 means it's in Base 64, which WinZip can open :)

It's similar to Uuencoding, it re-expresses binary content as printable ANSI
characters so it does not suffer from mutilation when the message is divided
into packets.

John TX,
That was the missing info:
"Transfer encoding: base64" means it's Zipped.
