Word - converting wordperfect files

frog1955

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I cannot convert and view .wpd files.
I have tried all the suggestions in help and nothing works.

Moreover, when I click 'open', I do not get the option of 'all documents'.

The .wpd file opens with a bunch of 'junk'.
Later, there are words separated by hyphens, no punctuation, which makes the file virtually unreadable.

I have gone to the preferences menu to enable 'font substitution' and I am notified that all fonts are available.

HELP!!!

It is very inconvenient to have to ask people to resend files as .rtf. (Text edit will open .rtf files.)

If you have to deal with any volume of WP files on the Mac I highly
recommend MacLink Plus from DataViz. WP converters haven't been included in
the Mac versions of Office since WP abandoned the platform several versions
back [pre- OS X].

If you have access to a PC version of Office you may be able to open the
files and save as .doc/.docx depending on what version of WP the files are.

I think your only hope is a) get them to send as .rtf or b) use an app
called MacLink Plus.

Word will open RTF files too ‹ but not .WPD (Word Perfect Document).

You "can" use the "Recover Text from any file" converter to pull out just
the text of a .wpd, but you lose all the formatting.

Of as others have suggested, grab a copy of MacLink Plus.

Bob is quite right: OLD PC versions of Word still have the .wpd converter
in them, but new versions don't. The converter was removed in Word 2007.

This came up here over the weekend.

Somebody (an Attorney) sent us a WPD file. Word 2007 SP2 (windows)
was able to convert this -- but Word 2008 (mac) didn't know what to do
with the file.

So, it's incorrect to say that Word 2007 doesn't have this option -- it
does.

Why the *mac* version of Word doesn't, though, is still an open
question.

Word 2007 is still equipped to open files created in WordPerfect 5.x & 6.x
format, but no other WP-specific filters are any longer included. However,
the filters are available from numerous sites & will work with any Windows
version of Word. One of the most comprehensive & authoritative sources on
the subject is MVP Graham Mayor:

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/wptoword.html#worddirct

As to the Mac version it isn't an "open" question at all - in fact, it
became quite closed when the developers of WordPerfect abandoned the Mac
platform pre-OS X - some 10 years ago (perhaps more). WP isn't viable on the
Mac so I'm sure MS sees no reason why they should be responsible for
creating filters for converting files created by software that won't even
run on the same platform. If Corel is concerned about Mac users being able
to do anything with files created by their PC-only software perhaps they
should provide the necessary tools... How about asking _them_ why they
don't? I really can't understand why so many folks want to lay everything
off as being Microsoft's responsibility. Besides, there are 3rd party
products available for those who have such a need.

Hi Steve:

Thanks: That's interesting. Microsoft Windows Office team swore and
declared that those converters were a security risk and they took them out.

They must have quietly put them back in. Probably got shouted at by a few
large legal firms :)

Information on them is really difficult to find, but the definitive answer
is here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA101170681033.aspx

But in Mac Word, "gone" really means "gone".

The WordPerfect converter is a very large and complex piece of software,
because the WordPerfect document object model (internal representation) is
nothing like the one in Word.

The cost of updating it would be huge, and I guess most people can get by
with RTF, which is common to both platforms.

Cheers
