Word converts equations into pictures

Processor: Intel

I had all possible problems with MSWord equations. The latest happens after I updated the office yesterday. After saving and opening file, majority of equations are converted into pictures - no way to open them or change them.
Dead frozen images! Waist of time and efforts is huge!

Any clue what it is? and if it is fixable?
And to the developers - would your Word will be capable of supporting scientific writing ? or it is for text and pictures only?

Just to answer your questions quickly...

1) Mac Word 2008 is not a good choice for scientific writing. Word 2004 is
a much better bet. Or Word 2003/7 in Parallels. Any of those will support
scientific writing quite well. You will also need a copy of EndNote.

2) You have not given your update level of Word. I thought the
Equations-to-Pictures bug was fixed by one of the updates. Check in
Word>About Word to see what your update level is. It should be 12.2.1.
It's a good idea to include it when posting here: we often can't help much
without that information.

3) You can get much better performance with equations by purchasing
Mathtype from DesignScience.
http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype_mac/default.htm

Equation Editor is a cut-down version of Mathtype.

If you are going to use both MathType and EndNote for scientific writing,
you would be best advised to use either Word 2003 or Word 2007 for any
serious scientific writing. Word 2004 is a bit too old, and Word 2008 is
not up to the task.

Hope this helps

I see John McGhie is answering your question. I'll mention, though, that the
only "regulars" in this forum are volunteers who use Microsoft products --
not Microsoft employees. The best way to make a comment to Microsoft is to
send it via the Help menu. Someone in the Mac business unit does check all
such comments.
