word could not create the work file. check temp environment variab

Huzefa

I have Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise running on Windows Vista Home
Premium. Whenever I load Word I get this message "word cannot find work file.
check temp environment variable". I tried the winword.exe /a and it works
fine. I also disabled the PDF addin from Adobe Acrobat, but this message
continues to show when i start Word. Also there is a backup copy of the file
made in the same folder as the original file. I am a lil perplexed since I
have been using Word for ages and it never gave me any trouble and now this.
Pls advise.
Thanks
Huzefa

if I find anything out, I'll post it here for you (and anyone else who has
just started getting this problem). So far, all I have found are attempts at
selling software.

makes me wonder where Microsoft customer and tech support are.

If you don't encounter the error when you start Word using the /a switch
then the cause is due to a third party, not the Word installation. Did you
work through the steps in this article?
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

Also, the PDF Maker add-in may not be the only one, you could have another
causing the problem. If after working through the cited article and you
still encounter the error, the take a look this article for finding COM
Add-ins that do not display through the Word interface:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555220

Disregard the Symptoms and start with Method 3. For Word 2007 change the
following:
1. Click the Office Button, click Word Options and in the Trust Center
settings, click the Trust Center Settings button
2. In the Macro Settings, select "Disable all macros with notification"

For steps 4-6, you'll find the options noted on the Trusted Locations or
Trusted Publishers tab

For Method 4, use this link for the Process Explorer:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

I am using Office 2003 on XP. Also Outlook 2003. I have NEVER had a problem
with Word (or Outlook) before and have not added any software that could have
begun this problem.

I just read the article you referred me to and it talks about office 2000
and word crashes. It is not applicable (as far as I can see) to my problem.

In addition, I have no idea of what the /a switch is. As far as I can see,
as a decades plus user of Word with no problems, why would I know what it is?

The error message being received is "word cannot find work file. check temp
environment variable". This is apparently a different problem than the
article you are sending us to is.

I appreciate the help, but I need it to be more specific to our problem to
be useful - can you give any more ideas?

Thanks

When you start word using the /a switch, as described in the first article I
cited ("Problems Opening Word" which deals with troubleshooting Word issues
in general, not necessarily a crash), it starts Word in a troubleshooting
mode and loads uses the factory defaults. If you don't encounter an error
then it indicates the issue doesn't lie in the Word installation and if Word
starts correctly, without any messages, then you need to follow the steps
outlined in the article.

The second article, ("How to Troubleshoot a Visual C++ Runtime Error in
Word) contains troubleshooting methods finding any COM Add-ins that do not
appear in the Word interface, as I noted in my reply to Huzefa, who
indicated a check for add-ins was made and found only the PDFMaker add-in. I
also noted the Symptoms section should be disregarded as the the
troubleshooting methods are still applicable.

In order to provide any additionally ideas we need to know the outcome of:
1) if the error continues to occur after starting Word using the /a switch,
and if it doesn't 2) if you've worked through the troubleshooting articles
and tried everything suggested -- even if you think a troubleshooting step
may not be applicable.

Again, the first article
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm) contains
troubleshooting steps for the most frequently encountered issues when
starting Word. The second (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555220) starting
with Method 3 would only be used after trying everything in the first
article.

Additionally, these groups are peer-to-peer support groups and are not
frequented by Microsoft employees. We're just users like you who voluntarily
try to help others out. And of course, learn more about Word at the same
time. :)

Hi Kaulfurst,

To add a bit to Beth's reply - it's unfortunately not uncommon for MS to not have an updated Knowledge Base (MSKB) article for a
problem found in an earlier version until there are enough 'saw it here too' calls and often you need to drill down through several
additional MSKB articles to get to a 'fix' :) They used to have one article that covered multiple versions, then went to single
articles that covered the same thing for each new version and now it's sort of a combination approach <g>.

The article on the word.mvps website on troubleshooting Word problems consolidates the steps into more or less one place (and could
also use some updating specific to Word 2007 I would suspect <g>) :)

The specific error you're getting is covered in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302629?FR=1
and other than the change in the data key location in the registry from
\9.0\ for Word 2000 (v9) to \11.0\ for (Word 2003 (v11)
that you get to after drilling down two more levels of MSKB articles to reach
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/198553?FR=1
for replacing a corrupted data key is the same step after troubleshooting with Winword.exe /A

I know my KB article I cited that contains information on finding COM
Add-ins that are installed per machine (in the Troubleshooting Visual C++
errors) needs updating for Word as well. I'm also thinking it part of it
could be split off for another one. BUT the top of my to-do list right now
is painting and wallpapering. <grin>
