"Word could not fire event"

Micki Daniel

As I open and close every document in Word I get the message "Word
could not fire event." I do not seem to have any problems with
documents after they open or close but it is very irritating. I have
downloaded and installed 10.1.5 and it still happens. I did get a
macro virus a few weeks ago but my Virus Barrier said it was fixed. It
had infected the Normal Template. Has anyone had this problem before?
Am I going to have to reinstall or is there a way to replace the
Normal template and do you think thats even the problem? Any
suggestions?

Hi Micki,

By all means rename/replace the Normal template and see if that helps.
Here's how:

Quit Word and navigate to your Normal template which should be in
/Applications/Microsoft Office X/Templates/. Rename Normal to something else
(like OldNormal), then relaunch Word. If this fixes the problem but you
have customizations, etc, in OldNormal that you want to maintain, you can
use Organizer to transfer those from OldNormal to the newly-created Normal
template. Then you can trash the old renamed file. To learn how to use
Organizer, see here (use IE not Safari to view this site):
<http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/WordMac/MacWordNormalTemplate.htm>

If this doesn't fix the problem, you can quit Word again, trash the new
Normal and rename OldNormal back to Normal.

Hi Micki:

Beth is right: "Could not fire event" can have a variety of causes, but for
us on the Mac it usually means "Could not run Windows Word macro virus..."

If it is happening on the open or close of each document, it is almost
certainly in the Normal template.

If a Mac antivirus product says it has removed a Word macro virus, I would
almost always disbelieve it until I had examined the Normal template :) In
your case, I would also take a look in the Office or Word Startup folders:
they sometimes hide malware in there too.

Cheers
