"word could not send message due to MAPI error" when emailing?

MAPI error

everytime i try to send a file as email from inside word i get the
error"message could not be sent due to unknown error" researched it online
and got reference to MAPI error. When i check task manager, OUTLOOK.EXE is on
and i cannot open outlook until i close that process from task manager. Any
ideas?
