Word Count Error

R

RM

I have 2 words on page 1 and 2 words on page 2. The word count is showing 5
words. Is this an application error? I am using Word 2007.

It sure looks like an error to me.

Word adds a word for each hard page break you insert. If text simply wraps
to the next page automatically, there is no extra "word". But, inserting a
page break adds a word.

This does not happen in Word 2003. And it does not happen in Word 2007 when
the document is in compatibility mode.

Hi folks,

As an aside:
When you first insert the the NUMWORDS field, Word counts all words except the NUMWORDS field. However, if you update the field,
Word then counts the NUMWORDS field also.

In the case of Word 2007, word count optionally displays on the status
bar -- so the numwords field isn't a consideration. Each time you insert a
manual page break, a Word 2007 format document decides that there's an
additional word (when viewed in Word 2007, but not when opened using the
compatibility pack in Word 2003). My guess is that there is a mistake in the
routine that counts -- perhaps there is some invisible artifact that isn't
being properly ignored.

Hi Herb,

So what does a NUMWORDS field return in these cases, and what is shown in the Document Properties?

Hi Herb,

The Word 2007 behavior appears to be affected by a Layout compatibility setting. If you save in in Word 2007 as Word97-2003 format
or if you save a Word 2007 document as .docX, but with Word 97-2003 compatibility mode selected Word will not count page breaks as
'words'.

Steps to reproduce:
=======================

1. Start a new document with .docX set as the default file type in
Office Button=>Word Options=>Save

2. Type Ctrl+Enter to insert a page break.

Result: Word count on status bar shows 1.

3. Close document

4. Start a new document.

5. Use Office Button=>Word Options=>Advanced=>Compatibility Options for[...]=>Layout Options

and turn on the setting for
[x] Split apart page break and paragraph mark

6. In the document, create a page break with Ctrl+Enter

Result: Word count stays at zero.

=============
All give the identical incorrect word count.

Right. But, it's still a bug. :)

Any idea what the consequences of using that compatibility setting might
be... other than getting correct word counts? ;-) Will using it "break:
something else?

This has now been reported to Microsoft as a bug. Hopefully... it will get
fixed. :)
