word count in word 2000

I have an annoying feature in MS Word 2000. When writing a
big document Word activates the "word count" every time
the cursor is moved to anothet position. It doesn't
actually open the word count dialog box, but it's shows
the text "Word is calculating the word count" in taskbar.
And this follows, that word freezes for couple of seconds.
Does someone know how to disable this feature?
