Word count vs. Live word count

I am working with a large word document (Microsoft Word X for Mac). The 'Live
Word Count' (in bottom toolbar) and the word count in Tool menu give two very
different numbers (the live count is bigger by 10,000 words more or less).
Why? Which is accurate?
