Word crash 10.3 Panther

I solved my crashing problem. A damaged Normal Template. Cinch to
cure. You can test by opening Word while holding down Shift which
bypasses all but default settings. If it opens it's probably the
template. cure is to go into Office Folder, Template Folder and trash
the Normal template. You will lose any AutoText entries, AutoCorrect
formatting settings and custom Macros, Toolbars, and Style sheets, but
they weren't doing you any good if it wasn't opening right?

Completely unforgiveable innit? What corrupts it?
Anyhow, it shows that making a backup copy of Normal while Word is in
remission is a sound idea.

The other good idea is to rely on Normal as little as possible. Use
templates to hold your styles safely.

If you rename Normal template, and can manage to open your OldNormal, you
can use the Organizer to copy over many of your customizations--Styles,
Macros, AutoText. Keyboard shortcuts are gone for good unless you keep them
in a global template or have a Normal backed up.

Elliott:

The thing that usually corrupts it on the Mac is Entourage's repulsive habit
of jamming your entire address book into Normal as an AutoCorrect List.
There is an option to turn this off, but the bug is that the Off switch
doesn't work, so every time Word starts you get a major edit to Normal
Template.

The other thing that corrupts Normal over time is lots of editing and
customizing of commands and keystrokes and toolbars. You have to work very
carefully and precisely when Customizing Word because while you are in that
function, Word will assume that you know what you are doing and allow you to
do things you really shouldn't.

Cheers
