Word crash on startup

P

Paul Thompson

Hi, Have recently installed MS Office Prof 2003 SP2 on my computer. But as
soon as I start MS Word up, it crashes with the following error:

AppName: winword.exe AppVer: 11.0.8106.0 AppStamp:44f8a192
ModName: dlpsui.dll ModVer: 0.0.0.0 ModStamp:394eef05
fDebug: 0 Offset: 0000f7d5

It even crashes in the background if I start Word up, change the foreground
to another program. It will always crash within 5 minutes

Any ideas where to start?

Thanks

I don't recognize the faulting module filename, but you can search your HD
for dlpsui.dll and examine its Properties to see if you can determine what
application it's associated with.

Hi,

Yip, I've discovered the dll is part of the default printer driver installed
on the computer. Why MS Word was excuting code in it in the background I have
no idea, but updating the printer driver software seems to have fixed the
problem

Thanks for your help

That would have been my first guess, since we frequently see that type of
error message with HP DLLs.

Word isn't necessarily "executing code in the background" but when it
starts it queries the default printer driver to obtain a valid font
list, printable area, etc. This is done so when you open your
documents they will display on screen as it will when printed.
