Word Crash

I had posted this problem yesterday to seek some advise but didn't receive
any. This problem occured again today. Can someone help please?

I'm using MS Word 2000 SP-1 on Windows XP Home. Say, I'm working in word and
suddenly I need to perform another task - say open internet browser or
launch another application, Word crashes without any notice. It doesn't
crash at start-up nor does it when saving. It only crashes when the focus is
moved to some other application. What is this? This happens so frequently
and has left me so frustrated.

Thank you.

Hi

Do you get any error message? Does Word hang or just disappear (suddenly
close)? Do you lose your current work or had you saved before switching
applications or does document recovery kick in when you restart Word?

Well, thanks Beth but my intention wasn't to rush or be demanding. I
mentioned it to avoid any confusion or more precisely to explain the reason
of the repeat post, thats all. I apologize, if I sounded that way.

After all said and done, I still don't see your post in either of the two
posts that I posted.

Ok, I observed the the problem more closely this morning and realized that
the Word crashes only when I open two word documents. It doesn't happen when
I launch other applications as I mentioned earlier. Even it doean't crash
when I open other office documents like Excel or Powerpoint. It only crashes
when I'm working on two Word documents at the same time. And again, the
crash timing is not consistent. Sometimes it happens relatively sooner,
sometimes later. It doesn't crash as soon as I open the other word document.
It happen when I minimize either of the open word document more than 3-4
times.

I uninstalled the whole MS Offcie XP and re-intalled it this morning. Can't
say it was a clean installation as I didn't remove the registery keys after
uninstallng the Office becuase I'm not confident enough to play with
regitery keys and didnt really want to make my life even more miserable.

But, now that I've re-installed MS Office, any patch that I had installed in
the past doesn't matter, right? I had been updating Office periodically via
Microsoft Windows updates.

Hope this helps you to understand my problem better.

Beth, I apologize for for the confusion. I'm using Microsfot Word 2002 SP-1.

I followed your instructions and removed Handwriting Recognition and so far
it seems to have solved the problem. Thank you so much for all your help.

Now, I've another problem, not related though. I'm not even sure if this is
the right forum to ask this question but here it is, anyway -

For quite some time, I wanted to apply SP-2. So, I downloaded SP-2 but when
I wanted to install it it says " The expected version of the product was not
found on your system". Now, this is weird becuase I can see that my version
is SP-1 as I've mentioned earlier too. To make sure, I tried to download and
install SP-1. The installation goes smooth until the end when it says
"Installation was unsuccessful". What is going on here?

Once again, than you so much for your help. I appreciate.

If Word was suddenly exiting upon restoring or minimizing the window
then Handwriting Recognition is more than likely the cause. You can
add it back if you think you need it. I encountered the bug some time
ago and after finding Handwriting Recognition as the culprit I added
it back in an attempt to reproduce the error and so far it has yet to
rear its ugly head. :)

As for your SP-2 error, please go to Help/About and provide the full
version number and we will go from there. Additionally, did you ever
have an unreleased (beta) version of Office XP installed?

Version 2627 is the RTM version. I believe the extra 0 at the end
indicates it is a Students and Teachers version (I'm not 100% certain
though).

If you are at SP-1 then I don't think you should be seeing 2627.3501.
Do you have any stand-alone versions of the Office apps? Did Word come
installed as part of Works Suite and you installed Office later?

Why don't you go to the Office Product Updates site and use the Scan
utility to find any needed updates:
http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx

and try installing SP-2 from there.

No, I'm not using OEM version but I installed the MS Office XP after buying
my notebook. I've already tried Office Product Updates site and don't seem
to get anywhere. When I run "Check For Updates", only SP-1 is active. That
means to be able to install any other update, first I need to install SP-1.
But the problem with SP-1 is - when I download it and try to install, it
installs eventlessly until the end when it says - Installation was
unsuccessful. I don't receive any other error message during installation
process of SP-1.

Check your Setup log file to see where it is failing. It should be in
your Temp folder or search for *.log. Each attempt at installing will
increment the *.log file. for example the first attempt will be 001,
second 002. I don't recall if it is exactly three digits but it will
be similar.

Yes when I "check for updates" using Offce Updates, it indicates that I need
SP-1. I've tried both i.e. downloading & installing, and updating using
Office Updates at http://office.microsoft.com/ProductUpdates/default.aspx
and installing. I get the same result - unsuccessful installation of
SP-1.
